2015 Chronic Wasting Disease Testing

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conducts an annual surveillance program for chronic wasting disease in deer. This year, scientists will be testing deer harvested in the following central Ontario wildlife management units: 42, 46 (north of Parry Sound only), 47, 49 and 50.

If you harvest deer in these wildlife management units, you can participate in the testing program by:

• giving roving crews a small tissue sample from the head of your deer
• dropping off your deer’s head at a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry freezer within a few days of harvest.

If they find just one animal with CWD, like they did in portions of Wisconsin, will they try to eradicate ALL deer??? Wisconsin hired sharp shooters in areas called " CWD Eradication Zones" Population of ALL deer were wiped out. Healthy or not, slaughtered!!!

So what are you saying Chris...we shouldn't take part in the program in case they find a deer with CWD ?

how does MNR determine who's a sharpshooter and what not? Looks like i'm part of the program since I will be in WMU46/47

It wasn't the CWD that eradicated the deer in Wisconsin, but the over reaction of state officials. Hunting hasn't been the same in eradication zones since 2003 and 2004 eradication.

Most deer eradicated did not have CWD!!!

That is how they stop the spread of CWD Chris...early detection, then stop the spread.

So I take it your not going to participate and just hope there is no problem ?

What is the plan if they find CWD?? They should already have one beings that other states and provinces have dealt with an outbreak. Will they do the same as Wisconsin?? Kill more healthy than sick. Will they let the predators take care of the sick?

I went to a meeting in March 2003 in Eau Claire Wisconsin where scientists were giving their options to the people gathered. Their plan was not pretty.

Only way to eradicate CWD it to eradicate all the deer, healthy mostly!!

Using synthetic doe urine is one way if preventing the disease. They have already started preventative medicine.

Agree with you Mike.
As far as eradicating deer if one is found - well that's the idea behind the testing.
Not something to look forward to, but if CWD is found, would it be better to ignore it?
Odds of finding a deer with CWD in Ontario - very, very low...and even lower in eastern/northern Ontario. Even in southern Ontario we don't have the deer densities that have (had) in the states, and we don't have the baiting practices (i.e. dumping tandem loads of sugar beets) which contribute to CWD spread.

One reason why we don't have CWD is #1- predators #2- Harsh winters and preventative measures such as banning deer urine.

What happened in Wisconsin is fact!!

I don't see Loring as a problem. Are the deer eating natural feed or at feed piles there??? Natural I thought.

I think banning natural deer scents was about as dumb as it gets. That was figured out by someone sitting in an office somewhere.

I was expecting you to come up with some data like this. I will read it, but it will take awhile to analize it.

It's a complex solution to a health crisis affecting the Whitetail populations Chris, but the science is there to support what they are doing in most states now.

A good reminder of the importance of following the import guidelines for bringing deer into Canada. Meat only, no carcass. Customs finally started to enforce it last year at the border coming back from NY and they were still catching guys coming back with whole deer. Even after customs telling some that they weren't allowed and given the chance to bring it back to the States they ignored them only to be reported to the MNR, guys were getting a nasty visit and fine the next day.

They have been enforcing it for years, not just last year.

We had our deer checked last week in camp and i asked this same question to the biologist......he said you would be surprised how much CWD is surrounding us (Ontario) and it is only a matter of time and it will be found somewhere in the province....so i asked what would happen when found....his words were......the entire herd in the area would be culled/wiped out.....now what size of an area were talking i dont know....the whole WMU maybe or just that township im not sure but he said it would be quite significant.....they would bring in the sharpshooters and they would litterally hunt them day and night, spotlight the fields etc etc etc then all carcasses burned.....

My concern in this area is that I have seen deer swim from Michigan to Ontario. There are several islands in the Detroit river that have a good population of deer . They swim back and forth on a regular basis.
Always wondered if they will be the ones to infect the deer in Ontario.

I think I kind of see where you might be coming from, on this matter. Some human being comes down with CWD, so they gather up all the rest of the individuals in that local, line them up and gun them down, and burn the bodies. No they don't, instead they isolate the infected individual, and then bust their backsides to come up with a means of prevention and a cure, less the disease spreads to others in the population. Why the double standard, in the case of sub-human species? IMHO,it's kind of like paving a pathway to extinction not only for them but eventually for us.

CWD is at our doorstep. They have tested positive animals in Michigan recently. It just a matter of time !

Natural scents were banned because it is taken from deer on deer farms. With CWD found on those farms it is easily spread by us hunters using these tainted scents without knowing it.
With no way to know what scents have CWD the only way to control it is to ban all natural scents.
It sucks but small sacrifice to be able to keep a healthy deer population.
