Here's the unfortunate truth ... anyone who has to make decisions for the public will be forced to be as conservative as possible ... and in this case it was do whatever it takes to save lives from COVID without much consideration to anything else. So any doctor you put up on that stand will say, shut everything down, due to the hyper-focus on the threat (COVID). Guys like Ford ... kind of screwed if you do, screwed if you don't. You'll always have people complaining on both sides (economy vs. health) who will say he didn't do enough.

For sure what is lacking is a balanced approach. I think the government's failure is (a) paying materially more attention to doctors than to economists. There was little balance. That would mean they failed in (b) using more customized approaches to deal with COVID, rather than blanket laws that treats every business and geography exactly the same. For example, stay at home order for ALL of Ontario, when there were towns up north with NO COVID cases? Or max 10 people in a restaurant, whether it is 100 square ft, or 10000 square ft in size. I still can't get over the hypocrisy in some rules ... not okay to meet with loved ones over the holidays, but okay to have 1000 strangers in the same Walmart ... oh and Port Hope closing fishing on the Ganny in April last year ... meanwhile the McDonald's just up the road was thriving with business. When last did Port Hope check to see that you can't get closer than 20' to a person using a float rod??? But yeah, it's okay to stand 6' away from someone in a line up INSIDE a McDonalds. Just absurd.

The rules created do nothing but generate a false sense of security ... and they just pick and choose what is okay ... then use a blanket approach on everything ... that's where the government failed big time.
