Interesting I've been attempt to reduce the squirrel population round our neighbourhood. I have both a coon size live trap and a squirrel size live trap. I bait the coon trap with dog food pellets, and squirrel. trap with a blob peanut butter. Initially I nab three squirrel, before setting up the coon trap. My first two captures with the coon trap were rats, needless to say they didn't get out of the trap alive. The squirrels I took for a 10 km ride west of town and release them. Meanwhile the little mask bandits found their trap, so far I've given three of them a 15 km ride west of town. I hope they are finding their new surrounding pleasant. I love it when I raise the trap door and they bolt from the trap.

A couple days have passed and I've relocated a couple more of the little mask bandits, from the city into a new rural setting. I recall I'd seen 6 in my side yard about a year ago, So hopefully that is 5 down and possibly 1 to go. I hope they are enjoying their new surroundings.

interesting, do you end up hunting them during the season? or do you only release them?
my uncle has a big problem with rabbits and racoons eating their garden haha i told them to try some traps not sure if they've attempted yet tho, have you seen a difference in the population around your yard with the catch and release ?
oh edit, just noticed you said in a city to rural haha. disregard my hunting in season comment LOL

Actually having seen the group of six in the previous year, and now having live trapped and moved out 5, I'm waiting to see if number 6 shows up. Last night it was a large rat that triggered the trap, I'm not sure if there will be an end to them. The squirrel were crawling under an eve on the porch that seems to have stopped. I'm still waiting to see if number 6 raccoon shows up, and if anymore will follow. So far I think the live trapping has had quite an impact, I believe the next door neighbour is getting a better sleep as it has cut back on their early morning crawling about his garden shed and backyard. I will say those live traps appear to be quite effective. At least it is something to keep me entertain during this lock down.

Get a Jack Russell..He cleaned up our garage from the winter mice and some rats. Problem solved.

Back on the farm, we had a rat problem as well. We use to keep a 45 gal drum as a grain barrel for the cows. I recall one day when I went into the milk shed to get grain for the cows, The barrel was getting close to the time to add more grown grain. as I look down in the barrel to see if there was enough grain for the morning feeding. What I saw was about twelve to fifteen rats in the bottom of the barrel. They apparently had climbed over the lip of the open barrel and dropped into it to get at the grain. Their problem was they could not climb the metal walls of the barrel to get back out. In the milk shed there was a 3 or 4 foot 1/2 inch steel rod bent into a ring at one end, while the other end had a roundish point on it. It made for an excellent cue to work on the rats in the bottom of the barrel. After cueing them all up it was simply a matter of taking the barrel outside the shed and up ending it to dump out their carcasses. If you have a rat problem and open ended 45 gal drum, you might pour a bit of grain into the bottom of and see if you get any takers.
