I'm done
I can see how it can become real expensive in a hurry to attract and feed these overgrown rodents. I have 5 does / fawns and 1 buck coming in almost daily. One thing I can confirm is that they do vary their diet. They will browse on other vegetation nearby with the occasional tasty treat desert of sweet molasses. I'm done however and soon they will leave and winter at their traditional deer yard in a cedar swamp down by the lake just a few kilometers away. I never tire of observing them as I look out the back window. They generally are only 30 yards away. The camera just adds to the moment for sharing. Goodbye and good luck to them until spring. Looking forward to seeing fawns again next year as the cycle of life continues.

Over a month later and the herd is down to a doe and large fawn. The other 4 have moved on to other areas. With snow on the ground and no supplemental feeding it makes sense that this area now can only support the 2 of them with natural twig browsing. This has been a mild winter with very little snow so far. This doe should be able to carry twins into the spring I'm hoping.

I would say they have had a pretty easy winter considering the warm temps and lack of deep ground cover.

With Wiarton Willie predicting an early spring and a balmy +2C today the 5 of them made an appearance. They lounged all day in the backyard and browsed here and there on the scarce food. They all look great! Nice to see them moving around and looking forward to spring fawns.
This one thought it would be good to check out a crimson maple tree.
