Enjoy it if you can, while you can, with this new system. Our group could not get a tag this year (north) and it will be the first year ever we are staying home.

I wonder how many second chance tags will get unclaimed and wasted this year as they don't have to be claimed/are available to be claimed until the end of the season therefore denied to others that want to go. Maybe that was the plan all along.

Second and third allocation tags won't cancel a hunter's points plus they still have a point added for the following season,so,there won't be any reason not to claim a tag. I can't see it becoming an issue.

The issue is that if someone has no intention of claiming or using a second chance tag, they wont have to, therefore they will not be available to others that want them.
As a matter of fact, they will get rewarded for not claiming them as they will get a point for doing so, which is nuts IMO.

To be fair, they should make it mandatory for second chance tags to be claimed by a certain date and the unclaimed second chance tags go for a third chance draw or in a surplus tags pool like they had every year.

Someone asked this question on the MNR FB site "So if people are not claiming there tags will they be Available to others?"

    and the answer was:

"Moose hunters awarded a tag in the second chance allocation are eligible to claim their tag throughout the moose season. Any unclaimed tags at the end of the season will be considered in the quota setting process for the following year. Learn more about the new moose tag process at ontario.ca/moosetagprocess."

Well, I’m debating on whether to claim a calf tag that I got with my third choice. Our group will probably only hunt 5 days max and calves are hard to find where we hunt. We have a cow/calf tag already so I’m thinking of saving myself $30.

It would be nice to have that extra calf tag, in the event you come across a cow with a calf. We got a cow/calf tag as well, but we also claimed a calf tag for that very reason. It would be better to take them both, as opposed to leaving the calf for the wolves, unless of course you would only take the calf….

OK,I understand what you mean and on second thought,I tend to agree. It seems to be self-defeating. These may be things that need to be "tweeked" going forward.

If calves are hard to find then maybe calves should not be hunted in your area.

There are lots of calves usually. Cow and calf tracks and sign bear this out. Cows are very good at keeping their calves hidden.

Here's a fun fact: it takes more hours to drive to my moose hunting spot in 1C than it does to drive to my elk hunting spot in Colorado. It's the old dilemma for Ontario moose hunters - be willing to drive 20+ hours of you want a tag.
