Tried and true for me but not to say new and improve gear has its place as well. At some point tried and true was the new gear lol

My immediate reaction to the question was "both" but upon reflection I'll take new gear. There's nothing wrong with "tried and true" but new gear often improves on the past. For example, waxed cotton clothing is great in the rain but Gortex is lighter, more water resistant and doesn't need to be refinished every so often. If new gear will do the job better than it's always the best option and eventually it becomes "old gear" too.
