Sometimes you get lucky! I came home last night to a dark bird walking through the back field about 300 yards away. Before I could get some glass on it to confirm it was a Tom, he was gone. Checked the time, and it was just after six. I’ve never really had much luck late in the day, or heard much gobbling in late afternoon, but decided to give it a shot. Quick change, and a sneak around to the back, called, nothing. Repositioned, called again, nothing. Worked closer to the direction the bird had gone, another call, more silence. Hmmm, maybe it was a hen after all, and I was running out of time, so decided to head back. Threw out one more call, and had an immediate gobble, and he wasn’t that far. Set up by the nearest tree, and started calling, cutting him off each time he gobbled. He came in on a string, full strut, dragging his wings, gobbling his butt off. Got the gun up as he passed behind a tree, and as he came out the other side I took the shot. In and out in less than 45 minutes, and my first evening bird. Happened so fast it didn’t even seem real. Definitely the smallest Tom in the contest so far this year! [IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]
8" beard and 1/4" spurs - bumps really! Im in the contest with a score of 21!!!
