Hunters go to great lengths to cover up their stink. But does it matter? Does the smell of urine spook deer?

Those of us old enough to remember Fred Trost, and his losing battle with the scent industry, also remember the resulting demise of a great tv show, Michigan Outdoors !
I have personally seen no response from deer when they encounter human urine ! Fred was right !

I have digitized copies of those scent scam episodes. Fred sure opened some eyes and kicked a bees nest with his reports. I really miss that program (the early ones).

It’s been my experience that human urine doesn’t bother deer. In fact it can peak the curiosity of a buck. The sound of urination can also attract a buck. I never hesitate to urinate into a scrape when the opportunity arises.

I like to urinate on deer scrapes.
Read research long ago that that the ammonia and other common items in urine help freshen the deer urine already in the scrape.
Viewing cameras, i don't know if significantly helps, but definitely doesn't repel the deer.
Sometimes i will make a mock scrape near my stand so i have a designated spot to pee.

That is Michigan Out of Doors. After Fred got his arse sued off by the scent industry, the show Michigan Outdoors went off the air. It was later resurrected by Fred’s son Zakary for a while as Michigan Out of Doors, as it is now. I can’t remember what happened with Zak Trost after Fred passed away. I remember the old old show when Mort Neff was the host before Fred took over. The other guy in there was Bob Garner I think…. That’s your history lesson for today ! Lol

Fred was an excellent host as he could relate to his viewers. He wasn’t an expert and his knowledge of hunting and fishing probably equaled those who watched. I really enjoyed watching his annual deer hunting episodes… it was neat to watch him get all excited at the possibility of shooting a spike buck. One year, he hunted deer with a broken leg and nicked an 8-pointer. You had to feel badly for the guy.

He ended up losing the Buck Stop lawsuit, I think because his test that he was relying on were not certified by an expert. As a result he lost the Michigan Outdoors show. A week later however, he was back on the air with a new show called the “The Practical Sportsman”. The lawsuit and other things made him bitter and it affected his show. After a few years, PBS lost patience with Fred and dropped him. I think that he tried to take the show online, but it didn’t work out.

Many of Fred’s show segments are on YouTube. For anyone who has never watched and is curious, check out this segment. It’s a classic! https://youtu.be/4T6uM7Mcdm0?si=LJpwqJzzs_WkJqQt

By the way, way back when, I taped several episodes where Fred exposes the scent industry. I once posted them on YouTube but had to take them down due to copyright.
