    Default Training: GSP

    Hi everyone,

I’m from southern Ontario (leamington area). Looking for some help on training a GSP, he’s currently 4 months nearly 5.

I have no experience, looking for a mentor/trainer to help. Right now we are simply doing obedience training. He’s been introduced to gunshots and grouse scent/wings.

I’ve reached out to some local companies but no return. I want to give this dog the opportunity and use him to the fullest.

    thanks in advance

Second the navhda recommendation. Everyone is very helpful and if you don't have any background with training a bird dog it's a good place to learn.

Third the NAVHDA recommendation. I joined the Toronto Chapter this year and it was the best thing for me and my dog.

Southern Ontario NSTRA could be a good org to join. NSTRA does not have formal training days but could be a good org to join to connect with experienced like-minded people and perhaps find mentors. They hold most of their events at Ruffwood and Gold Creek.

If you don't get any help, just get the dog out as much as you can, exposure and conditioning are key. Pointing dogs are not hard to train. Let the dog do its thing and shut up. When your pup points something, shoot it. Repeat

The best training that pup can get right now is just running through the bush in all different types of cover.
