What a great morning, No work for me, and no school for my 6 year old son today, took him out for his first real hunt this morning. He has been so excited since we set up the blind a week ago and it all payed off. woke him up at 530 which was cutting it close but he was ready to go, took the atv part way to the back and we walked the rest to the blind, we could here the gobbling on the way back, got to the blind about 6 o'clock it was a little light for my liking as the turkeys were not to far from are setup. I had 1 hen decoy but decided against putting it out as I could tell the turkeys were fairly close and just wanted to get hidden away in the blind. I made a couple calls and the turkeys were going wild in the roost, after about half hour I heard some fly down and also heard some hens. I made some calls every 10 or so minutes , I was thinking the turkeys went with the hens in the opposite direction but to our luck we had one lone Tom stray from the pack and he wanted to check out our hen calls, he circled behind us and would have to cross the ditch to get on our side. We went back and forth for at least half an hour and he did not want to commit, finally I hear him gobbling on our side but not in our sight. He was waiting for our hen to come to him, we went back and forth and he got quiet for 5 minutes and I decided a light call to see where he was and he was in close with a loud gobble, before I knew it he was running across to the right side bush and a quick shot about 40 yards and he was down. My boy was thrilled and me as well. I think he is hooked. It's amazing when things work out especially trying to keep him interested and having fun. Good sized Tom , about 23lbs 8 1/2 inch beard and longest spur about 7/8" . I will post pictures when I figure out how my photos to will not upload, I tried the Flickr thing but haven't figured it out.

Ya it was great getting him out, I remember some of my first times out as a kid nothing better. I always underestimated turkey hunting but it is alot of fun with some good eating, I may have to try for a second this year. Good luck to everyone else getting a bird
