It begins - Nip
First hardwater trip of the season starts tomorrow. 3 days on the ice chasing walleye, jumbo perch, northern pike and burbot. Spent the last two days going through gear. Got to the cottage at 8 pm this evening and spent the night replacing line and tying fluorocarbon leaders. No drinking tonight as tying good knots with old eyes on 6 lb fluoro needs 100% focus.
Some of the gear sorted and ready to load:

Tying leaders and prepping 8 rods:

4 of the rods are set up to jig a variety of shiner tipped rattle spoons. The other 4 are setup for deadsticking with a hook and minnow or minnow clapper.
Having 8 rods preset and ready to go is not necessary but eliminates having to re-rig stuff in the cold. Something goes wrong or want to change up just grab a different pre-rigged rod.
Temp when we arrived tonight was -18 and going down to -21. Tomorrow's high is -12. Temperature inside the cottage when we arrived was -8. Took 3 hours and the woodstove running wide open burning seasoned oak before it was comfortable. Season opened January 1st but i usually wait a week so the Darwin candidates can find the weak spots in the ice. The place i like to fish is 10+ miles offshore so i need to be certain before i venture that far.
Most of my ice rods are 28 to 42 inch St. Croix Mojo Ice with Shimano Vanford, Sustain or Stradic reels in either the 500 or 1000 series size. Do have the odd Daiwa 750 series reel as well but can't remember the model. All of them except one are spooled with 8 lb ice braid and tipped with 18 inch 6 lb fluoro leaders connected via micro swivel to the braid and then tied direct to lure/bait. The odd one out is entirely spooled with 10 lb fluoro and just tied direct with no leader or swivels.
And for the record i have really nice gear (which def helps) but am electronics free - the screens, flashing lights and battery hassle aren't for me but to each their own. That's why i never post video - pics are hard enough for an old F@#$ and i still think there is something to said for being able to write a story instead of just recording it. Just follow my gut old school and usually do just fine.

Any reports on the ice conditions on Simcoe… Can you get out to the perch grounds…. With all the snow they had this past weekend was just wondering….
Joe I’d say you are more than ready, I love that rod box…. Good luck and do be careful….

Casey's yesterday put out a post yesterday said there was 4 to 6 where he checked.
No reports on vb yet I'll be there later to check some out. Planned on fishing tomorrow morning but remembered I have a be at the vet by noon so it will be a very short fish lol.
Bottom end of cooks has a bit off Glenwoods saw a report yesterday off Rayners rd there was 3 inches not far off shore and my buddy checked it the day before and there was 2 . He will be fishing the area tomorrow so I'll have a better idea in the morning.
Alot of the ice came after the big snows unfortunately vb still had a bit of ice when the snow came. I think one more warm day and vb would of blown out aswell.
Things are just about to start in places

If this cold weather continues I'd be up for walk out for a feed of perch next Friday. Going to get the gear down from the garage attic tomorrow. Itching to try my home made mouse trap jaw jacker

Looks like my first whittie location could be skimmed over I'll have to take a look tomorrow. If so I'll be after them for a day next week then back to the perch. Been craving a nice fresh fish and chips. The jumbo throwdown starts on the weekend. Hopefully the 14s don't eluded me this year , last year was the first year in along time I didn't get a 14. My buddy got a tru 15 on our last day out a nice dark looking one last March. Was a beast.
What side of the lake do you normally fish?
Good luck
