So have seen a few sentimental pieces that didn't work for me but this is one for the books.
This is how I started (well instead of pheasant it was woodcock) hunting with dad.
Think most of us can related

My dad taught me to fish but wasn’t a hunter. He bought me my first gun and I had to figure it out from there. We had various dogs, but none capable of hunting birds. I ground-swatted a pile of grouse. Don’t remember when I finally took one on the wing, but I do remember my first woodcock. Couldn’t believe it fell from the sky.

Fun fact: Travis Frank’s dog Daisy is half pointer, half setter.

Reminds me of my dog Dora. One who taught me great dogs are born and not made. From humble beginnings of a backyard breeding between two hunters one with a good Setter the other with a good pointer this little girl came home. Developed into one of the best dogs I ever had the pleasure to hunt over. Great nose, steady as the Rock of Gibraltar, flushed on command, and if I knocked something down it was delivered to hand without a second thought. One on my favourite hunts was the one I used the .410 to give the woodcock a fighting chance. The rabbit, though I usually pass on, taken as I had every confidence in her steadiness and her addiction to feather over fur. Damm I miss her.

    I thoroughly enjoyed that episode.

Yes, that's how I started but with beagles and rabbits.

Hunted bunnies with beagles for 20 years before I got my first bird dog. Even now with a pointing dog, I still can't shake the desire to wade in and bust brush along with the dog

LOL, almost! But it occasionally pays off with an extra cattail rooster
