2024 moose draw breakdown
For anyone interested in seeing how last year’s moose draw shook out, the information can be found here:
https://data.ontario.ca/dataset/moos...rocess-results Scroll down to the CSV file and download the data… it’s in an Exel Spreadsheet.
For Unit 15B, 134 Gun Bull tags (25%) went unclaimed. The MNR needs to fix that! They were proposing that “Any Hunter awarded a tag on their first choice in the second chance lottery would forfeit their points whether or not they claimed the tag”. They also were supposed to come up with a third step to the draw but didn’t offer any details.
It’s my guess that the election put a hold on any proposed changes forthis year so will have to wait until the 2026 draw for any changes to take effect.

That is nuts,
It is crazy the guys with very high points that apply and don't except their tags in the second draw. That really needs to changes.

There is no problem in the system at all...
It is working perfectly as where designed to do ...
Hunters are happy to they have a chance to get a tag ...
Mnr is happy that the Moose stay in the bush...
And I am getting a tag every year easily and going Moose hunting...
Where is the problem (No offence)

Interesting stuff. I still believe that if those extra tags are issued, more moose will be killed and less tags will be available next year. I just don't see it making a difference to the average hunter other than perhaps in year one.
Its unfortunate the moose population is declining, but that is reality. Thus there will always be unhappy moose hunters no matter how the system is adjusted.

I think the fact that the MNR decided to change the current system(albeit slowly)is enough sign that the majority of the hunters are not happy,AND the MNR also realized that the system has the inherent flaw of allowing hunters to push other hunters out.
As far as " this system is good "-Alfoldivandor-i do not believe the changes will do any major negative impact on your rate of getting moose tags.
Why -because it will make only the "honestly i want to go hunting this year-therefore i will commit my hard earned and hard to grow back points " to apply.
Only hunters with serious intentions will put their points in. Their number will not be much greater then today(especially if penalties -losing all points-will be looming for not claiming the tag ).This will be especially evident in the "hard to hunt"WMU-s

I love this system and same I have had a tag every year, our group of 4 has had multiple tags, I just think that amount of unclaimed tags should be a way to get them if the second draw had a cut off to buy and was a system to get those tags how ever it is.
I maybe gready but I would love to bow hunt with a tag that cost points and go back up rifle hunt a bull after that someone got a tag free of points.

I don’t view the proposed changes as a deviation from the current system… more like some tweaks to allocate all of the available tags. As far as “unhappy hunters” go, my suspicion is that they were always grumpy because there are too many hunters and few moose and tags where they hunt.
Based on the current status of the moose herd, I think that the point system is the most fair method to allocate tags while managing the moose herd.
