Well its spring and the skunks are out. And to my luck I found out how well my dog can hold something under point. Every time the skunk would change direction, so would Indy and then he would lock on point again just keeping the skunk held in place. I mean good on him knowing how to hold his prey but man did he stink after

well chalk it up to a teachable moment. Here's wear the command "Leave it" comes in handy. Skunk bit of a inconvenience, porcupine trip to a vet.

The whole problem was that I didn't initially know what he was doing. I was walking him pre-dawn and had no idea it was a skunk until far too late. I thought he found a rabbit again until I saw the flash of white. He did come off after being called but in the dark there was nothing I could do. Simply avoiding that field while in the dark now

Skunks and porcupines; hunting dog rites of passage. Congratulations on the steadiness

Mine damn near got sprayed on thursday at my dads. She bolted and by the time I saw she wasn't going for a squirrel it was too late to call her back, she was almost on top of it. Luckily the skunk was close to the chicken coop and had an out so it ran under there before the dog got to it. Close call. Gonna have to go walk the dog there in the early mornings and late evenings see if I can catch 'em in one of the fields. .222 from 200 yards away is the easiest and least stinky method of getting rid of the little buggers.

Great hunter. Yes? Fine figure of a man. Yes?
Good. That is all you need to know. For now.

Wish I could get rid of them but I live in town and we have about 8 that live within a block of me

I've hear a live trap, can of sardines, large blanket and a deep rain barrel can reduce the skunk population pretty quick.

Indy sounds like a champ, even if the aftermath was pretty stinky. It’s cool to see him in action.
