So I went to the deer camp last weekend to set up my trail cameras. Normally I go in early April and ticks aren’t usually out yet, however since everything is greening up I knew that I would run into them.

On my way to camp, I purchased a bottle of Ultra Shield spray and some coveralls. I gave the coveralls a good misting and let them dry before heading out. The next day, I walked through an over-grown field and noticed 4 or 6 of the buggers climbing up my legs. I was very surprised to see this as many on the forum reported great success using Ultra Shield spray. Maybe I didn’t spray enough on. Comments, advice?

Sam-Not sure about Ultra Shield, but when i used in the past Sawyer Permethrin 0.5%-it was clearly recommended ,to almost spray the clothing "wet" .Then air dry before use.

I spray my clothes and boots, etc. with Bronco.
It has less Permethrin than UltraShield but it is supposed to be safer for vinyl seats, the finish on fishing lures etc.
My area is not that infested with ticks yet but I do play in many other areas, and I was told that this product is preferred by hydro workers.

I don't know about you guys, but I cannot tolerate the very strong citronella smell of Ultra shield as it is overbearing and ever present when you spray this stuff in your clothes. It seems to last forever and never dissipates. Great way IMO to ruin some expensive hunting clothes and gear, by spraying it with this stuff.

Even after washing my clothes 6 or 7 times to try to get it out, I could still smell it. It gets in your vehicle and everything else, and again good luck getting that out anytime soon. Because of this strong scent I would not recommend it for deer, bear or moose, or any animal that will smell it a mile away. Maybe ok for turkey, but that's about it. I use sawyers of which I got a good supply when I went to a US border town and am very happy with that as it does not smell at all.
