Anyone heard of someone catching a sturgeon through the ice? A friend of a friend caught this one while fishing the Ottawa River upstream from Petawawa. He was using a minnow fished near the bottom. It was carefully released.
I was usually good for one or two through the ice per season while pickerel fishing a little down river from Pembroke, never caught anything over 5 lbs, the small ones have a hide on them like coarse sandpaper and are hard to pull up because their mouth is further back than most fish.
I saw a GIANT sturgeon in lake Ontario. Fishing in the Cobourg harbour for pike and bass, this thing popped out of the weeds right in front of me. Must have been 6-7 feet long I'd say never seen anything like it before. It was more white in color and you could see the spines all over it! He didn't want anything to do with my spinnerbait though...
