This is NOT of North American species, but it is useful in highlighting key features to look at when identifying waterfowl. These are the same tools used to ID our duck species and some of the species are similar with the same key features.

Jerome, just picked up a copy at a conference. It is way over the top as an I.d. guide for the casual user as the content is much more focused on the life history and status of each species. There isn't an extensive I'd portion and the two textbook sized volumes are a bit overbearing for field i.d.
That said, I am going to spend lots of time with my nose buried in those many pages.

Delta Waterfowl has a new field ID guide. The combo of this one and the LeMaster is perfect for the truck/boat.

Some of these sites no longer function, unfortunately. Just as an FYI, Merlin has a bird ID app that works great. It includes pictures and calls for males/females and filters birds by your current location. It's on the app store and is called "Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab".
