2014 Trip to Shining Tree
I haven't posted much of my hunting exploits, since stories are only so good without pictures, and often I'm either alone, or forgot my darn camera.
I took my dad up to Shining Tree for a week of hunting and fishing, and while the weather was pretty lousy, I did manage to get out most days for a bit of bird hunting. We were up from Sept 29 - Oct 4.
Total on the 5 days was 8 birds for me. Given that this year has seen fewer numbers, I didn't think that was too bad. I didn't get back to camp empty handed on any of the days out. Fair mix of spruce, and roughed. Which when cooked, is pretty well your white or dark meat. So this years Thanksgiving feast was grouse.
I think I've started a family tradition, since my wife and son like when I bring home game.

Nice images. On the weekend of Sep 20, we spent a day in the trails at Shining Tree without spotting a single bird. It had rained the entire time.
Last Sunday I saw three and shot the first bird of the season (different place). Bird numbers are apparently low based on my treks so far in WMUs 29/40/47. Still a bit early for such conviction .....

There are 3 lodges there. We stayed in the one nearest the highway.

It's beautiful country. I haven't been back there in years. We hunted Moose out of Three Bears Camp. Speaking of,did you see any Moose sign and how was the fishing?

I remember 3 Bears back in the mid 80's when I worked up there. We were about 45 miles from there down near Felix. I remember the grouse hunting as being spectacular back in the bush up there. The best time was around the opener. They seemed to disappear for some reason during moose season. I remember shooting as many as 4 standing in one spot. I miss that - the best grouse hunting I ever had.
