Elderly man shot when officer tries to put down deer

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing an incident involving a York police officer discharging a firearm in Thornhill on Monday.The SIU says that just after 9:30 a.m., officers responded to a call of a seriously injured deer on the road in the area of Henderson and Proctor avenues.
Investigators say the officers closed the area to traffic and used a firearm to put down the animal, but shortly after that, a 78-year-old man was found injured nearby.
The man was transported to hospital, treated, and released.
Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to investigate this incident.
Anyone who may have information regarding this case is asked to contact the SIU.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

So do we know if he was actually shot?

It could be richochet,but,more likely bullet splash from hitting pavement or a rock. At any rate,someone has some 'splainin' to do.

so it looks like a pellet ricochet, buckshot? i highly doubt these guys carry buckshot or lower.

I was watching the news, looks like the guy was treated and released from the hospital. Apparently it was a buckshot ricochet.
What seemed really silly to me is that it took more than 12 hours to remove that deer from the spot.... Letting it sit under a covered tarp in the middle of the city for all to see, only to have the meat spoil....very silly if you ask me.

Most police services that still carry shotguns only use 00 buckshot and or slugs. It was officer choice which he carried.

Sounds a little overkill to use a shotgun if you have a handgun that you know how to use.....oh yea....

wrong. the decision to use shotgun instead of handgun was absolutely right!
you haven't been around when someone shoots full metal jackets on pavement. too bad that the same outcome appeared to have happened here anyway.
whatever you do, know your backstop and understand if it will actually be one...

Actually I have been around, and spent many hours and hundreds of rounds studying terminal ballistics. My goal in that situation would be NOT to have the bullet exit, or to exit onto soft ground. Might have to shoot from a different angle or move the deer, but not really a problem......

They may have done better if it was trapped on a streetcar.
