Just a follow up on this, the cold would make the cord get quite stiff and make it real challenge to keep the ducer hanging straight. Alot of fiddling and rearranging to try to get it reading properly. Going to try attaching it to a stick or tip up this year or just break down and get the ice ducer.

Here is what i made for this year, tried it out once, works pretty good, think i might trim off some of the foam. $3 in stuff from Home Depot and a pool noodle.
