Dog and Cat Fur Being Labelled as ‘Faux’ Fur
I had never heard of this before..rather disturbing.
Vancouver Kingsway MP Don Davies says because of a lack of federal laws and labelling requirements, many clothing items labelled “faux fur” in retail stores actually contain real animal fur, from species including rabbits and domestic dogs and cats.
Much of the fur is imported from dog meat and fur farms in foreign countries, where animals are housed in tiny cages in appalling conditions, according to The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals. The fur can also be the byproduct of a canine killed in the dog meat trade. The group says the creatures are often killed by being hanged, electrocuted, stabbed or sometimes skinned alive.
Large volumes of that animal fur is then processed by the garment industry and intentionally mislabeled as faux or synthetic fur, according to the BC SPCA. It can commonly be found in jacket trim, boot and glove lining – and even children’s toys, like stuffed animals.
Davies says the deception amounts to a consumer fraud where animal lovers who are trying to boycott fur may unwittingly be supporting the fur industry.

I see there is a petition worth signing;
Whereas:
Millions of dogs and cats are inhumanely raised and confined, and brutally slaughtered for consumption and the harvest of the fur; and
The United States, England, Australia and the European Union have taken steps to prohibit the importation and/or sale of these pelts.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, request (or call upon) the Government of Canada to:
1. Recognize the cruelty and inhumane nature of the raising, confinement, and slaughter of dogs and cats;
2. Recognize the special relationships Canadians hold with dogs and cats in their homes and workplaces; and
3. Ban the importation of any dog and cat pelts or furs, and prohibit the sale of said products in Canada.

From what I gather, the issue is with 'faux' products that are suppose to be synthetic but are actually dog fur. When they use Coyote fur it's usually labelled as such.

To me, fur is fur and I'm pretty sure the chicken I ate at lunch didn't have a great life either.
Not going to sign that one.

I agree with with the faux issue. However bullet three states about importation of dogs and cat pelts fur.
Which could be coyote. Or for the wealthy a pelt from a trophy cat hunt.

This looks like it could be used to control importation and sale of legal hunted animals. I personal would not sign any petition that is supported by the SPCA. We are their enemy.

ref to Bill C-246 hopes to address this issue;
his may finally be about to change: Rookie Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith tabled the Modernizing Animal Protections Act last week, a private member’s bill bringing much-needed reforms to the laws protecting animals (or lack thereof) at the federal level.Mr. Erskine-Smith’s bill modernizes the animal-cruelty sections in the Criminal Code, outlaws shark fin products, sets new standards for fur labelling and brings in a long-awaited ban on the import of cat and dog fur into Canada.

Are they skinning the animals alive? I hope they are sleeping.
What a game they play.
Here we have all these nice pelts and they won't use them.
