    Default Fly fishing for Whitefish

I know it's a while till mayfly hatch, but has anyone fly fished for whitefish using a mayfly? I'm looking for information on if I should tie nymphs or mayfly adults. I have heard that Whitefish may prefer to hit under the water compared to surface.

I'm interested in this as well. The only information I've found online is an article by Gord Ellis fishing for them on Ivanhoe Lake in spring with dry flies. I've also seen mention of them being caught in the St. Mary's rapids. Now I'm thinking about it there is an episode of The New Fly Fisher, that has Bill Spicer fly fishing for them with streamers.

I understand there is great ice fishery for them in lake Michigan, it would be fun to find a way to target them with the buggy whipper.

Most of the whitefish I have caught were on nymphs. The same nymphs you would use for trout - Hare's Ears, Pheasant Tails, etc. The whitefish and trout are feeding on the same bugs.

Have caught a few on dries while fishing for trout during a strong hatch of PMD's. IMO, attractor dry flies might not be productive - I believe whitefish are primarily bottom feeders.

The parts of Ontario I'm familiar with don't have Mountain whitefish, {our loss} which I understand live in rivers. Ontario has lake whitefish and round whitefish found in lakes, using the same or similar habitat as Lake trout.
