I'm wondering about water striders. This seems to be what I'm observing, on a breezy day I see them floating in pods of a couple hundred , sheltered from the wind in calm spots. Then in the evening as the breeze dies you see hundred/thousands of them making small v wakes out on the main flat current of the river. However I never see any fish rising to take them at any time.

Oops ,looks like I'm seeing different things, the "pods" are whirligig beatles and fish don't eat them apparently they have chemical warfare strategy

I've never seen fish eat them, but then...it's been a few years since I fly fished for trout 2x a week! Reminds me of earwigs...the only bugs my cat won't try to eat. Must be something about them.
