    Default 2nd best hunt ever

Went north for some ruffies on sat morning, booked a tiny economical cabin with a little kitchenette and a bbq , dropped off our things and headed to the logging roads with our mt bikes and hunting stuff. After hours of not seeing a grouse we headed to our cabin and had dinner and a campfire and decided to try the same area in the early morning. By 11am we went back to make some burgers without a bird and pulled out the backroads mapbook and came up with a plan to check a couple new spots.

Made it to the new spot at 1pm and saw a grouse right away but it gave me the slip as I was getting loaded up. Started walking the trail and heard some leaves shuffling looked at the boy and he said I heard that too, I found an opening in the thick bush and looked in saw a grouse and the 12ga mossy went bang and the boy said "did you get him" I replied "yes" for the 1st time. Walked into the bush to grab him and heard another noise and the 2nd grouse was down. dropped those 2 at the car and went the other way on the trail and saw 3 grouse on the trail caught up with 1 and we now had 3. went to drop that 1 off at the car and said to the boy we will shoot the 4th on the way to the car then try the pellet gun to get the 5th, well number 4 and 5 fell to the shotty on the way back and we were done after an hour and 20 mins.

here's a happy kid, he held the birds with gloves and even helped me pull on the legs to get the breasts, we took the legs also. made some tacos for tues night dinner.

Nice birds congrats. The smile on the kids face makes everything worth it.

The thing I learned early (4yrs ago) on is grouse come to road later in the morning to peck gravel which aids in digestion. They also sun themselves. For my weekend duck hunts in camper it works out perfectly. By the time I done duck hunting and had breakfast after...the birds are ready to come out to roads. Might not be factual, but it is what I have learned for my area. Great hunt and story.

Good story and pictures sash! I thought you guys only do ice fishing!

Going for a dirt bike ride is not the best method for finding grouse IMHO.
You obviously did better walking, and remember grouse will almost always surprise you
unless you are way up north!

FIVE grouse in less than two hours? WOW, I am so jealous!!!

Congrats Sash, that's a great pic and even better memories!
Hawk, I think he's talking about mountain bikes, pedal power. I've thought about trying mountain bikes for hunting but never got it organized. Do you use them just to access deeper into the trails or cruise hoping to spot them?

Also wanted to strap on Xcountry skies and do a little bunny biathlon but never got around to that either...
Heeere fishy fishy fishy fishy! :fish:
