Gander Mountain Said to be Considering Bankruptcy
If you shop at Gander some big sales on now and if you have gift cards...good time to cash them in !!!
Sad reflection of the times...
Gander Mountain, the St. Paul, Minnesota based outdoor retailer, is reportedly preparing to file for bankruptcy.
There have been no official details confirmed as company spokesman, Jess Myers, said the company has taken a “vow of silence.”
This is yet another hit on outdoor/sporting goods retailers, as we’ve now seen Sports Authority declare for bankruptcy and close 300 stores last year, and not to mention Cabela’s being acquired by Bass Pro Shops; although that deal is reaching its own snags and may be falling apart as well.
Even though Gander Mountain has taken its “vow of silence,” there is plenty to go on that suggests hard times are afoot for the outdoor retailer. If you take a look at their website, a plethora of sales and markdowns on all regular-priced items will tell you all you need to know.

Never a good thing when another hunting/fishing competitor exits the mix... Whenever I visited Buffalo, I always managed to sneak into their Tonawanda location, must say that the selection was constantly dwindling over the years yet the prices remained unchanged. The only deals to be had, were in their monthly flyers but you had to be a local to take advantage of that. What I think really hurt them was their weak online presence however, amateurish website, difficult to navigate. In this day and age, that fact itself can be a deal-breaker.

Your right, not then best site. I shopped on-line from the flyer as they offered FREE shipping. I could pick it up on Ogdensburg instead of driving all the way to Watertown. I like their store better than BasePro though. Wonder is the deal falls through with Cabela's they will see blood in the water and buy out Gander instead.

No wonder. They didn't ride with the times. Outdated. Beat out by the bigger stores. IMO

I thought Cabela's had already bought out or into Gander Mountain several years ago as they had been selling some Gander Mountain branded goods for quite some time .

I remember somebody bought out their mail order department 15 or 20 years ago, I think maybe it was Cabela's
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst!

I didn't know that, your right...
Gander Mountain sold its mail order business to Cabela's in 1996 with a no-compete clause. In 2007 it won a lawsuit brought by Cabela's to resume online sales.

update..yes indeed...they filed yesterday and will close 32 stores;
The privately held St. Paul-based retailer announced Friday that it has voluntarily filed for federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to help sell it and its subsidiaries, including Overton’s, an online boating retailer.
