Great day to be in the woods today well maybe to nice. Heated up quick and by noon pup and I were to pooped to grind it out. Found some birds today and with Nova steady enough to concentrate more on shooting connected with a few more birds. They proved bit more of a challenge today for the dog as a few tended to be runners and the first couple got away as I thought he was trailing grouse. In the end pegged 5 woodcock 1 male and 4 hens so if you believe the adage if you still shooting hens the migration hasn't finished should still be good for a while.

As for terrain Eddy22 I find grass to be a no go. Golden rod and shrubry under mix age poplar/birch and the odd pine is always a good mix.
    Should look something like this

Thanks for posting. The majority of bush I have permission down here to hunt is mature and doesnt have the skinny type trees in your video. I've been finding them in pockets of grassy areas that have clumps of young Burch trees.

Yup that transition from mature bush to open meadow. They like that tapering transition however its hard to find as its either wood lot or agri field. Hard to find that right mix. gone are the abandoned homesteads or even old apple orchards would work. Thing is when ideal is not available close will do in a pinch.

Great looking cover and your dog works nicely. I wish my DD would slow down enough to cover things that thoroughly.

He may never be a good pheasant dog but for woodcock he will be a master. 8 months old male pup and he is already grinding them out.
