Apprentice outdoes the Mentor, again....
Great hunt this morning, Wes, my boy and I went out back of the house for a chilly duck hunt....I had watched a bunch last night and figured the cold has finally pushed some birds into the area. We had a cold north west wind which didn't work in our favour and with roads and houses, we can only shoot into the north west. That being said, we watched quite a few birds land a ways off in front of us and paddle around, none landing close to us or the decoys.
So, we watched and waited, the sun finally came up and game on. We watched one bunch of ducks move it's way closer to us but behind so no shooting there. We continued to wait and listen to that bunch quack and chuckle as they paddled around behind us out of sight.
Finally, something must have pushed them because they took to the wing, low to the water and come out in front of us and the boy had at them...
Super impressed at his shooting as 3 shots and 3 ducks, all drake mallards. Upon retrieval, we find that one has a band. His first ever, what a morning.
Upon registering, we find the bird was banded 01/28/2015, so not a young bird, banded in Onondaga County in New York state so not a local either.....
Anyway, a great cold morning in the blind with my boy, should correct that, my young man, great shooting, great eating, and a band to boot.
He wasn't the only one walking with swagger this morning, couldn't be prouder,
Hope everyone else can have a morning like this one,
TurkeyJohn

Good job. Nice way to teach your young man how to respect nature, and what real food tastes like.

You have to love when youngsters have a great day hunting. Better than shooting them yourself.
