    In truth, Mute Swans should not fall under the migratory birds treaty act as they are a non-native species, but they somehow got 'protected'. It is estimated they eat 1/3 of their weight in submergent vegetation daily, and disrupt another 2/3, so effectively they destroy their body weight in submergent vegetation daily, This has a fairly negative impact on native waterfowl and other native species that utilize the same food sources. As most of you probably know, they are notoriously territorial and establish their nests on prime breeding habitat which displaces many ducks and geese. I would urge anyone to write the CWS and MNRF to complain about their growing abundance and the associated negative impacts they are having to Ontario marshes and breeding waterfowl habitat.
