I wonder if it's the fat they are after, more so than the meat. Animals instinctively know what they need and since an ounce of fat
contains 240 calories; one ounce of carbohydrates or proteins contains just 100 calories, they may be chowing down on the fat in the winter.

Especial eating the base of the feather were there is usually lots of a fat.

    Good article..thanks !!

Rabbits are compulsive chewers. If they ain't chewing, they are either asleep or dead. I've seen them chewing chicken feathers................Daniel

I have seen where jack rabbits would chew on the coyote carcasses that we threw out.

well it's gotta be more nutritious than eating twigs and bark... also mentioned in that article that i've read before is that squirrels are the biggest killers of hare babies which i never would have guessed.

Not surprised to read all this...
I am sure I first saw it in an OOD Magazine article in mid 1980's that snowshoe hare are fond of eating frozen meat.
It's a dog-eat-dog world out there. I'm glad to be the proud owner of several firearms!
