Default Recreational Fishing Now Free for Canadian Service Members

Great news ..Thanks Mr. John Yakabuski !!!

[/QUOTETORONTO — Ontario's Government for the People has delivered on its promise and is giving back to those men and women who have sacrificed so much. As of January 1, 2019, all veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members residing in Ontario can enjoy recreational fishing across the province without having to purchase a fishing licence.

"Our government is working to show appreciation for veterans and Canadian Armed Forces members, helping make it easier and more affordable to enjoy recreational fishing," said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Recreational fishing is a $2.2 billion industry in Ontario and an important tradition in the lives of many. With this regulatory change, all Canadian Armed Forces members - retired or still serving - can maximize their time on the water, and ice, by fishing all year round at no cost.

"Today, and everyday, we should salute the sacrifice and bravery of our service members who have defended and continue to defend the rights and freedoms we enjoy," said Minister Yakabuski. "By allowing veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members to fish for free in Ontario's beautiful waters and encourage more time outdoors, we are offering a token of recognition to these heroes who deserve our respect and gratitude. Thank you for your service."

Ontario's Government for the People continues to take steps to show Ontario's appreciation for veterans, Canadian Armed Forces and their families.

Good. Those people deserve some recognition.
I’m suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I trust a dog who doesn't like a person.

    Not quite accurate.
Not all veterans can fish free yet.
Many do not have the proper veterans ID yet, as it is just being rolled out again.
Those who released 2016 or later can apply for it now.
For those who released prior to 2016 and didn't receive the old style card (which is a majority of the veterans) can not apply for the new style card until sometime this summer. Issuing the card may take quite a while after applying depending on number of applications.

I'd like to see an estimate of the hit to the SPA, and some suggestion of how this revenue will be replaced.

With any luck, it will be replaced with money that would have gone to the liberal party if they had retained party status ? Much much better use for the money to use toward the vets and service personnel!

Not everything is about the money......

"We enjoy the rights and freedoms we have today because of the sacrifices of those brave women and men throughout history, and those actively serving to defend our rights and freedoms," said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. "The people of Ontario are grateful for the service of our veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members who have, and continue to defend our freedom and values. These heroes deserve our gratitude and respect, and this is one small way we can show that."

"Recreational fishing is an important part of the lives of many Ontarians. Whether you're a beginner or expert, fishing is an excellent way to get outdoors, relax, de-stress and get involved in your local community," said Yakabuski.

Ontario has a great diversity of freshwater fish and is recognized worldwide for its recreational fishing. By allowing veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces to fish for free, Ontario is making life a little easier for those who gave and continue to give so honourably with their service.

This is one of several steps Ontario's Government for the People is taking during Remembrance week to show Ontario's appreciation for veterans, Canadian Armed Forces and their families. The province recently announced they will ensure Royal Canadian Legion branches in the province are exempt from paying property tax.

Still would go to the Liberals as they seem to field a lot more men into serving their country in the armed forces.I mean take a look at even the leader of the World,s most powerful military right now The Donald (skipped out of Vietnam because of a heel spur) or George Dum Bush Junior made sure he lingered around the base, volunteered for political campaigns and failed to attend drills and lost his pilot fighters license.LOL
