I've used everything from 12 gauge slugs & buckshot, 25:06, 30:06 and a Ruger 96/44 mag.
All have worked fine.
Some just shine better in certain situations.

A few years ago we were stalked all the way to our cabin door and then charged.
I've seen countless bears over the past 50 plus years and have never worried. Since then I've been keeping my 30/30 carbine handy. My son just picked up an 870 pump with a 13" barrel so we're gonna use that from now on as the camp gun. Likely put a slug in it with a couple follow up OO's.

I've only shot nuisance bears, using a .30-30 or a .280 Remington.
If I were going to actually hunt black bear I would likely use my .30-30 Ackley with Barnes 150's.

I put buckshot first then slug. Just in case of a charge and you can’t really sight down barrel

If they are so close that you cannot sight down the barrel it will not matter if it is buckshot or a slug, your buckshot will not have opened up much more than the the diameter of a slug at that point.

X2. Plug out and empty out.
Take the warning labels off. Darwin will solve the problem.
