    Default Quick after work Hunt

So last evening, the Wes and Mom gone when I get home...Having a competitive athlete and a Wife who coaches means I get quite a bit of time at home on my own...Decided I had my chores done and had a little light to got out for a quick hunt in the little blind in the pond behind the house...Paddled out in the kayak as the canoe is waiting in the trailer for Saturday morning and really didn't feel like unloading it. Settled into the blind and not a thing is going on, no birds flying, none in the water, at least not yet....getting closer to official sundown and in comes a young mallard, boom and the first duck is down, a young mallard drake, he's in the water face down and not going anywhere so I decide to just mark him and stay put....Good thing I did as a buddy of his flies in, roughly the same area, boom, and his buddy is down now too....getting a little darker now as we're into the last half hour of legal...All of a sudden, a bunch of Woods whiz in, catching me off guard, I take 2 shots but only get the one....By now I figure with the overcast skies that's a night, paddle out, retrieve the ducks and wouldn't you know another bunch of woods come in and I'm totally in the open and the gun is sitting in the boat unloaded already...oh well...fun to get out, but not as much fun if Hawkeye Wes was there, likely would have bagged more....Just wait until Saturday morning when he can come again....

By the way, Wes and Wifey gave me a fish cleaning table for my Birthday in February...one with a sink and tap you can run a hose to....absolutely love it for cleaning ducks....put a can with a bag in it underneath, you're not stooped over cleaning, it's at counter height....if you can get one on sale, highly recommend it for us more mature fellows...

I had a similar hunt. Snuck down to camp after work. Set up in a pond on our place, and managed a double on a pair of wood ducks . Not long before dark a small flock of geese came in, but landed far from me. Three stragglers came late and landed on my mallard decoys. Only one left. This morning I went out before work, and added a green wing to the pot. Something I forget what a fantastic part of the world we live in!
