All done by Wednesday at Noon
I hunt with a bunch of my neighbours, most of whom are Amish. The group has been hunting my property and others in the area for over 40 years. Only one if the original guys is still hunting. When I retired 7 years ago I decided to join the group.
The group is interested in getting meat for the freezers but they do appreciate seeing big bucks. This year we had a good start with 4 deer being shot on the first day. 2 large 4 pt busks, a button buck and a male fawn. On the Tuesday another button buck was shot in the morning. In the afternoon we pushed a small 5 acre bush and I had 3 deer come out on the side I was blocking. Within 2 minutes of pushing The first deer ran right at me and after I shot it twice, it continued to run to the edge of the field, where we recovered it. This was a fawn. Within a few minutes I heard a couple of shots from the guys pushing the bush. A fawn ran out but it was too close to the road to shoot. A big doe came out along the same path and then turned and ran towards me. I dropped her with the second shot. My first double.
The next morning we tried 3 places with no luck and decided to push my woodlot. A doe and a fawn ran out into the adjoining field and one if the guys shot both of them.
3 deer were shot from my property this year.
On Friday we had a butchering bee followed by a BBQ of fresh venison burgers.
We divided the meat equally and I ended up with 47 pounds of tenderloin, roasts and ground venison. All vacuum sealed and in the freezer.
this was also my first year of field dressing a deer by myself.
We were hunting hear Chesley, Ontario.

There are a number of younger guys in the group that keep the rest of us older guys moving. It’s nice to relax after the butchering to have a few burgers and beers and discuss last hunts.

How is it one careless cigarette can cause a forest fire, but it takes a whole box of matches to light a campfire?
