Ice explosion???
Any other members ever have this happen?? Was the weirdest thing.
Just before I was I going to pac up today I heard a very loud explosion sound almost like transformer box does. But also the like a gun shot mix sound. Only way louder.
It was at 1150 this morning but the interesting part was I felt the ice move on my feet. By the time I said to myself what was that and looked down at the ice this loud bang behind me like I mentioned it was like a transformer and gun shot sound but way louder. I was 2 km out and I could of swore a house blew up lol. I kept looking back to see if it was a house that exploded lol.
Never ever have I experienced anything like that was it the ice???. Only thing I saw in the walk back I was the 2 inch crack was closed. It was wierd and it was a loud bang.
Anyone else ever experience this before??. First for me I have felt some good shakes and listen to it travel for miles as it travels all around the lake.
This was only a small movement and a bang that was it.. I was so confused I'm still confused lol. [emoji54]

Common.
It's a pressure crack.
Happens when ice is expanding due to freezing.

Hey I have heard pressure cracks. This was like a bomb going off behind me. The sound was in the air. Like I said there was a small movement then a bang. .
I'm been shook pretty good by cracks and big shifting where you drop an inch or 2 and water spewing out the holes. .
This didnt even scare you like some of the shifting simcoe is known for. I barely felt the shift and then a bang that broke the sound barrier lol.
It's the bang I'm weirded out about just never heard a sonic bang on the ice. It doesn't even bother me I just have never heard that and I have had cracks pile up not far away. Those sounds are normal.
On a side note the lake was relatively quiet as that bang was the only noise I heard all morning. I honestly thought a house exploded

Those are the noises I'm I'm used to even it pilling up. Even when it buckles up the lake. I have spent alot of time on the ice .
In fact it's my favorite season is being on the ice.
It literally sounded like a transformer box blew up with the crackle of rifle in the mix. Just louder . Literally checked about 10 times to see if smoke was coming off the shore line some place lol.
So weird.

Maybe what you heard was a sonic boom, never know who is flying overhead, it'll wake you up for sure.

How is it one careless cigarette can cause a forest fire, but it takes a whole box of matches to light a campfire?

Ok so I just googled it. Happened here last year . People were actually calling 911 saying something exploded. Firemen went looking for something that exploded.

Also in 2014 in Toronto they say it sounded like a sonic boom

But then again these things are supposed to happen when its extremely cold. It was minus 9 when I went out and climbed in temps.
Then again there was more bang then movement. On a side note I dont think I ever shifted this was either just like I just moved to the SW a inch . Interesting.
I would much rather these gentle sonic booms. Over some of the shifts that make you stand up and figure out where that big crack or heave is lol. [emoji1787]

Was probably that rare shift that made it. Or and it definitely woke me up more of a wtf moment. Definitely not a normal thing for sure. Probably happened 300 to 400 yards away. That's where the crack was .
The big cracks are coming soon usually around 8 inches of ice then they start to heave or push down. This crack was near a main one later on. My other spot always gets a good one just before my spot.

Been looking on line all morning this is what it sounded like right behind me.
Nothing recorded on the ice witch I am trying to find. Only thing I keep finding is people calling 911 in a panic that something exploded.
