Mid Week report
Probably one of the best ML weeks I've had in years, love the snow down and the 'crisp' morning hunts. The evening hunts are now afternoon hunts and I'm home in time for supper at 5:00
I've noticed that the deer are no longer eating many apples or much of the corn bait, most of what was put out last week is still there. I noticed this in past years too. They seem to know that their diet needs to change to get ready for the winter ahead.
Lots of deer watching. The does and fawns look good and they're still traveling thru the bush even with lots of coyotes in the area. I haven't seen any signs of predator kills on deer in all the bush we have walked since Nov. so I assume the yotes are still finding lots of small game.
Anyway, so far this week I've had 5 deer in the scope, less than 50 yds, all broadside shots. I love the feel of the adrenaline rush and the heart thumping in the chest when you have done everything right and have them 'dead to rights' and then let off the trigger and watch them walk away.
But it's mid week now and time to look at harvesting some meat for the freezer. Hopefully it will come together after having such good luck so far. But if not, still had a great week out in the bush and to me that is the best part of hunting...the hunt.

I'm only seeing antlerless deer this week in Michigan and lots of them. I think all the bucks migrated to Ohio...lol

I've only taken the .58 Musketoon out a few times. The wet weather has me hesitant to sit out in the open tree stand with it. I've been using the .50 Traditions for the 'aft' hunts which has the most activity and better optics for the 'dusk' opportunities.

I have a friend with a Hawken reproduction that he may bring out to hunt on Saturday, which means I will be out with orange on with the crossbow.

I was out Monday all day, including during the surprise snowstorm Monday morning. Quite a bit of snow fell in the Marlboro forest area. I did not see any deer and there were very few tracks in the fresh snow on the two properties I hunted. I set up a ground blind in an area where I had finally found a scrape the previous weekend. I will be out all day tomorrow and hopefully all day Saturday as well. I hope some sort of buck shows up!

Well said Mike, it's all about the hunt and opportunity to have them dead to rights and let them walk. When the day comes that my heart doesn't skip a beat when I see a deer, bear or moose I'll hang it up. Good luck the rest of the week and may you fill the freezer...

3 of us hunted Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning with no sightings. Tues night, just at dusk I see a large bodied deer moving across the field in front of me. It stopped broad side and my Knight went boom.....it ran out of sight. I went to where it was standing and saw 5-6 drops of blood. It would be dark in 10 minutes....so I followed the trail immediately....the blood got more intense after 40 yards....then buckets on the snow....and I found her at 150 yards. Biggest doe I have seen.....I thought for sure the big body was a buck. I was using two 50 grain pellets of Triple 7 with a 250 grain Barnes Expander....complete pass thru both lungs (but high). The next day I measured the distance.....105 yards. I am always amazed how far a deer can run....after being fatally shot. Sorry no pictures.
