Either 270 would be good but the cost and availability of the sm would concern me a bit. As for a scope you cant go wrong with a leupold VX2 2-7 x33 or 3-9X40.

Take a good look for a nice used rifle also. The Browning xbolt is very nice. As for a scope I'd recommend a Vortex. Cabelas in barrie will be having them on sale on boxing day/week. Vortex viper 3-9x40, FOR 299$. I've sold all my leupold and gone to vortex, but that is what I like better. Leupold is also very good, you just pay a lot more IMO.

If you are actually considering taking shots up to 500 yds then I would go with the 270WSM. Most people aren't capable of accurately judging distances passed 300 yds though. The Xbolt and Tikka T3 are great choices and a 3x9 quality scope is all you need. I would invest in a rangefinder also to confirm your distances.

I am hearing good things about a new scope in the States and being sold on Amazon.ca

I don't remember the exact model, seems it was around 400 USD.

Apparently thy are the new and upcoming similar to the way Vortex began.

I have an X-Bolt Stainless Stalker, it is a great rifle chambered for 30-06 it's topped with a Redfield Revolution 3-9x40mm. This same set up would do well for a 270. I suggest that unless you reload that you stick with a .270 Win. The WSM cartridges are not cheap the shoot

Are you saying the scope should be good for 500-yard shots or should COST up to $500.00?
Either way, the recommended scopes have all been good choices. Additionally, I am a big fan of the Burris Fullfield II in 3-9X40. Like the Vortex, it has many of the great qualities of the Leupold but at a lower price; about $300.00 or so.
WSM cartridges do cost more and there is less choice if you want the most accurate load without handloading, but really, that's a minor issue if you want the WSM. Go with your gut. I will say, though, that if a deer is too distant to kill cleanly with a .270 Winchester, the .270 WSM won't help much unless you have mad shooting skills, because you're talking about shots beyond 500 yards.

I just looked in the For Sale by Owner. There's a good rifle for sale.....

I would think that there are lots of wsm's for sale out there, all makes and models. And old fashion 270Win might be harder to find....
