Personally I'd wait until 8 weeks or so and pick the most independent pup all other things being equal.

Well, I should have started with Congratulations!!!
Even in the same litters pups differ in temperament, structure and hunting abilities. The overall picture is hard to tell before about 6 month old, but the temperament (to Sharon's point) and structure are not hard to see at 8 weeks old. A dog with a good structure will hunt longer, better and have fewer chances of injuries.
Germans say - colour doesn't hunt! Colour is the LAST thing I look at.

finsfurfeathers congrats on the new litter of pups, i'm sure they will grow into excellent hunting dogs. Hope stella is doing well.
