Ripped by the quality of the boat or by the dealer?

I have a 16 1/2' Lund, I can't remember the model but it's a tiller with an 82" beam. Mine is rated for a 50, but I bought it used with a 40. Sometimes I wish I had the 50, but then the way my 40 hp Honda works I wouldn't trade it for the world. More expensive than a Merc and uses less gas than a smaller Yamaha (just ask Woody). I can troll with and I caught more than enough walleye to prove it. Don't be afraid of a 40. A friend of mine has the 14' Fury with a 20 hp and wishes he had the 30 hp. Mercs are boat anchors, my dad had 3 and all of them were crap. The old Evinrudes were great (I know I still have one), I'm not sure about the BRP version. I've owned Yamahas and they are good motors as well.
My recommendation is go Honda or Yamaha, spend the money, they're worth it.

Mercury is number 1 on the water - dont you guys watch the commercials
My experience with Mercs - 78 thunderbolt 9.8 still running like a top. Sold a 2007 15 hp two stroke to my cousin as I upgraded and that motor still runs without issue. Only thing ever replaced was a pull cord. Currently running a 2006 60 hp Efi. I dont see them as unreliable. All the manufacturers make the odd lemon.

Go to the east coast and see how many mercs you see. Or any salt water for that matter.

My father had 3, all of them lemons!

Everyone I know with a boat has a Mercury of some sort on it. They all have lots of hours on theirs and no-one complains or has had any issues. I'm only a year into my 90hp on my Lund 1650 Rebel XS, but I have no complaints. The motor is quiet and seems simple to work on if I need too. The props seem decent as well.
Like the Ford vs. Chevy debate, everyone's motors are probably good. I like how Mercury is everywhere, from your dealer to Bass Pro to a remote shop, whereas Yamaha, Honda and Evinrude seem like they'd be difficult to get serviced quickly in certain places. Time will tell...
I could have got a Honda on my boat, but the difference to buy that Honda on my Lund was $3K extra for the motor alone let alone missing out on show specials as I'd need to order a Honda rigged boat. It was also 100lbs or so more. I'll pocket that difference - thank-you.
Brunswick owns Lund, Crestliner, Princecraft and probably more... They own Mercury as well. The best deals are with their motors on their transoms.
(PS - Under 150hp, are not the majority of motors made by Tohatsu? Mercury, Nissan, Suzuki, etc.?...)

The thing is you don't need to service a Honda or a Yamaha. Mercury, Evinrude, Johnson, all Tohatsu, that's why I don't buy Evinrudes anymore. I still have an OMC Evinrudes and it's been far more reliable and required far less repairs than either of my father's 2 Mercs over that time frame.

I'm talking about the typical oil changes, etc. $3K motor difference + the cost to have a boat rigged with Honda (or Yamaha) controls + losing out on 'Show Specials' is not worth it. Factor that in with real world experience with people that own current or near-current models made it a no-brainer for me. (and I'm a Honda snob for everything else motorized.)
I hope I have the same luck.

Wow a lot of Mercury bashing...lol
I hope I'm not jinksing myself but here goes...I bought a new LOWE 16.5' fishing machine pre-rigged with a 50hp merc 4 stroke back in 2006. Still running great today but I do take good care of it & garage store it. I troll for walleye with it on Erie with a trolling plate. So far so good but it's getting old...lol
