Buying a new moose gun

150m and under I'd go with a 308, on a purpose built short action. You'll save weight by virtue of it being a short action, and with smaller cartridges in the mag. At that distance I really do not see a point in going to a magnum rifle, or even to a long action like a 3006.

Im a fan of Ruger rifles. They are generally lighter and slightly more compact then the standard counterpart from the competition. They also have integral scope bases, again saving an ounce or two. Check out a Ruger M77 Hawkeye

I also want to pick up a dedicated moose rifle. I want something "fancy". Would like a Weatherby Lazermark in 300 wby mag. More then likely going to be a lazerguard in same calibre

Beautiful guns! If budget allows go for it. I agree with bigger caliber. Dead it dead, they don't know the difference. Shot placement is key either way. Small caliber important for game recovery. Large caliber important for meat quality. Last two years I've shot deer with .338 WM at 50yards. Less meat was ruined than what I typically saw with my .308. But definitely more expensive to shoot.

Agree 100%. Any w light short action .308 with a quality 2x7 scope will be perfect for your long hikes in and short range shots. No moose will ever notice the minute difference between a .308 or .30-06 as it expires. For the money I like the little Ruger American. You can get it in Stainless/Synthetic and it has a removable mag which can be handy.

each day is about a 7mile hike up a mountain and back
rain, snow, sleet, cold doesn't matter we hunt sun up to sun down

I've been looking at a 300win mag or a 300WSM with a 1X6 scope on it as the hunt is a mix of bush, logging roads, cuts and swamps. I'm young enough and in decent enough shape to shoulder anything but don't really want something that is ridiculous in cost of ammo
I looked at a Tika T3, TC encore and a few others
just looking for a few suggestions
budget is around $1500

In the "for sale" section,Max-4 has a Ruger M77 all weather SS in .30-06Sprg. I,too,am a dyed-in-the-wool Ruger M77 fan. I would buy this one in a heartbeat if I didn't already own 3.

Weatherby makes an excellent rifle with superior accuracy. The cheaper Vangaurd would be a great choice in non mag or mag calibers and guaranties sub MOA
Check Cabelas Canada on line, they have good deals including Vanguard and scope combos for around $1000.00

Your max range being 150 yards should take out all of the 300 magnums, it is total overkill at that range.

30-30, 308, 30-06, 6.5x55, 45-70, 270, 280, 7x57, 8mm Mauser, they will all kill moose inside that 150 yard area and not cause you to have to have a heavy gun for recoil or need to spend $8/shot. Get a good bullet (FTX ideally in the 30-30) and go out hunting. If you want to hunt moose out at 500 yards then start looking at magnums.

I don't know how anyone can recommend a 30-30 as a good moose caliber out to 150.
IMO at 150 the 30-30 is marginal even on deer.
The 25-06 is a far superior round than the 30-30 and even then I wouldn't recommend it as an ideal moose round.
I take my 25-06 as a back up but use my 30-06 as a primary moose round.
The 30 -30 is far behind the 25-06 in retained energy.
