Are there any must dos when I'm in Alaska in August? We'll be arriving in Anchorage.

Go to Denali park, take the bus tour, there are 4, 8 and 12 hour tours available, we took the 8 hour tour and I wish we had taken the 12 hour one, saw lots of grizzly's, caribou and moose very scenic tour with lots of rest breaks.
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst!

renting a car and touring the state?
I would suggest the bus tour that goes to the end of the road, if you go to Denali. A long day, but the animals and sights are amazing.
rental car, you're probably not supposed to, but we did anyways, drive up the Dalton highway for a day.
been a few years since I've been there but was one of my favourite vacations.
more than a bit jealous.
make sure you post when you get back!

We're planning on renting a car. How about kayak trips and hikes? Any "tour" companies you would recommend?

Hyder, AK
But you have to drive thru Canada to get there....
You should get HYDERIZED.
Take the warning labels off. Darwin will solve the problem.

was many years ago. only tour company we used was the tour into denali. cant remember the name, but they were the only outfit offering the long trip at the time.
rest of the time, we just cruised around, without any real plans.
Alaska mile post book/guide was very informative.

As well as Denali, if you there are kids along the Musk Ox farm, the Iditerod Museum and the Reindeer farm are all in the Anchorage "area". As well, there is a lookout point on a mountain just outside of Anchorage (can't remember the name but any local will know the location) where you can get a great view of Anchorage, the air force base and if you are lucky and it is a clear day, you will be able to see Mt McKinley (Denali) in the distance.
And .... if anyone is nervous of heights, you will NOT forget the bus ride into Denali ..... a narrow road that somehow two school buses can pass each other and no guard rails with a long drop off to the valley floor!!!
