    Default Elbow Dysplasia in Dogs

Anyone have personal experience with this? What was recommended and what worked? My 11 1/2 year old setter has this and is walking on 3 legs. Her hard running days may be over. See the surgeon next week.

I thought ED was a birth defect and showed up before they were a year old...showing up when she's almost 12 would lead me to think it's related to arthritis.

Pain management at this point would think, ....ask about Rymadyl....I like the results we got from it, over Metacam.

    Who gets Elbow Dysplasia?
Elbow dysplasia primarily affects medium and large breed dogs, and clinical signs manifest as puppies,
usually between 5-8 months of age. However, dogs can be brought in at any age suffering from
osteoarthritis secondary to one of the causes of elbow dysplasia. A high incidence of occurrence
has been noted in Bernese Mountain Dogs, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers, and
Labrador Retrievesr. Other breeds affected are the Newfoundland, Saint Bernard, Mastiff, Springer
Spaniel, Australian Shepherd , Chow Chow, Shar-Pei, Shetland Sheepdog, and some Terrier breeds.
Typically, both elbows are affected, but dysplasia can be unilateral.

Yup had a great golden that lived its whole life with it. There's no decent surgical option (or wasn't 13 years ago anyway). We didn't walk him far or much and he never needed meds. If he did overdo it one dose of metacam that night and one the next morning was usually sufficient.

Thank you gentlemen. The dog is already on Metacam but it isn't sufficient. X-rays next week and then we will see where we are at. Certainly hope it's not the end of our running days.
