The Sport Tech 2 system is approved for sale in Canada. You can buy them at Cabelas in Ottawa.
The older telemetry systems are not legal in Canada anymore either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just ask for a licence from Industry Canada.
Industry Canada has a search mechanism to find systems that are legal.
Lotek has approved collars for our professors to track, owls, wolves, deer, moose, mice, coons, snakes, bears and fish, etc.
My Wildlife box bought in Canada in 1995 from a retail store in Markham , 218 frequency. Not allowed anymore. I have the original letter from Industry Canada when they were allowed. Somehow they arbitrarily decided they are not allowed anymore. The houndsmen have used and bought telemetry systems for over 50 years in Canada. Thanks for getting my blood pressure up.
It all comes down to money, if Garmin bought out or paid for a modest handful of existing licence holders in the MURS frequency , or developed a separate collar for Canada they would be allowed. Industry Canada has done an extensive study. If hundreds of hounds with collars , converge on the Tim Hortons in Cochrane , the drive through "might" get your double double mixed up!
I have the study, send me your email, I will get you a copy.

The Sportdog Tek1.0 and 2.0 are definitely GPS-based systems and seem to work just great. Perhaps the Garmin is better but I'm not sure that there is a lot of evidence of that. As far as I can tell the Tek 1.0 works in very heavy cover up to a kilometer (at least, I don't let my dog get much further than that) . SportDog says it can work up to 11km but I think you and your dog would have to be on top of a tower 11 km from each other to see that performance. The Tek is cheap at Cabelas right now.

I have a Garmin Astro 320 that works great. Got it from F&T Fur Harvesters and have bought spare collars from Conkeys Hound Supply. Both were good to deal with and had no problem shipping to Canada. I can usually track for 3-4 miles in heavy cover and hills.

Do it show up on a map? Or just a bearing and distance?

We use the new Garmins and they will show on your handheld GPS map and also on a laptop in real time. We can see all dogs at the same time on the lap top, I believe this was accomplished with an app but I did not set it up myself.

Tek 1.0 has no map but the Tek 2.0 does which explains the difference in price I think.

I have discovered another system that is approved by Industry Canada for use in Canada. dogtra Pathfinder. It uses a collar and receiver, then utilizes bluetooth to transfer the location onto your smart phone. I met Laurie Hewitt at Carp Gun show, she sells them . www.hewittcustommillwork.com/dogtra
