Flea Control

I've treated my 12 year old cocker spaniel for fleas over the years. Usually in late summer and early fall I see a flea or two so I treat using Revolution. This year I started treating in May because I noticed a flea. I've treated every month since because she still has fleas. I've even shortened the application time down to 3 weeks this month and I still can't them under control.

Anyone got any ideas? Bad year for fleas?

Revolution doesn't kill deer ticks, so leaves your dog at risk for Lyme disease.

Advantix 2 works great on fleas and ticks but I don't like applying it.
So I use Nexgard - little more expensive , but a simple monthly cookie.

(I use Heartgard for heart worm protection.)

edit PS: Haven't noticed this year to be bad for fleas/ticks. I'm planning on treating my dogs for 12 months this year due to the mild winters we've been having. Of course if we have a nasty winter , we will be going to plan B.

AdvantixII works great but I also switched over to Nexgard this year due to the simplicity and lack of mess ( we also have a cat ). No fleas or ticks and theses dogs are in high Tick areas all the time.

Our U.S. vet put our lads on Bravecto this year ....so far I'm very impressed. Not a single flea or tic since we started back in Apr and it's been a particularly bad year for infestations. As an added bonus it's an oral medication, so we don't have to apply it onto their backs.

So we'll stick with it for next year, buying it state side is about 1/2 the cost of it up here so not as big a hit financially.

If you want to save some money, TSC in the US sells Liberty 50 (same ingredients as Advandix) at a fraction of the cost...about $45 for the entire season.

I used the Seresto collar for the time this year and it is the easiest method for control.

I haven't seen a flea in decades, you likely have bedding infestation - treat where the dog lives, not just the dog.

Sorry have to agree with MikePal on this one ... Bravecto here too with all dogs and we have been training and trialing this spring and summer thru high tick areas all over the province and into the US. One pill, three month coverage and I don't need to worry about taking the collars on and off due to the dogs spending excessive time in the water with a flea collar on.

If you have any other animals in the house or outside that aren't on flea prevention they could be the source. Revolution doesn't have a repellent effect so you can still find fleas if your dog is getting re exposed from the environment or other animals. The fleas would need to be on the dog for a period of time before the Revolution will work.

Our girl Bella gets a scoop of brewers yeast every day, which on top of it's proven hair, skin, nails and liver function benefits is also known to be an effective natural flea and tick repellent. So for me that's a great base to have. We are in the country and she spends most of her time outdoors, but does have her indoor bed of course. This time of year she is out all night. Haven't had much coon or skunk probs for a good while hehe.
All this being said, with the current tick crisis I did order 2 Seresto collars online for me and a bud this year. For Bella it's been great so far it seems. She hasn't been in the water so I'm expecting 6 or more months of protection. For my buddy with his German papered long haired 2 year old Shep it was quickly a different story. In less than a day Riley basically lost the use of his back end and couldn't hardly get up. First thing John does is take the collar off, cause he knew something was off. I researched it and sure enough it is mentioned for sure. Things slowly got better but it was 2 days before he could even stand up well and another week easy to get more normal.

It can be scary stuff with these chemicals
