This theft business is ridiculous. I hope they find the guy.

Boy I know how you feel. I lost a high end camera two years ago. It made me give up on cameras period! I thought I'd just role with the theft but I didn't. It's still pi**ing me off. HOpe you get them. I even had the guys plate on his vehicle but no pic of him taking the camera so I was SOL.

Good luck dutchhunter. Hopefully the police do something, but with theft under $1000 it isn't a priority with them.
Let us know if you ever hear anything further on it. And I hope you kept a copy of the pics before you handed over the SD card.

Cameras are often stolen because the person knows they have been caught trespassing on the camera and feel that they have to remove the evidence.

then you remove the SD card instead of the whole camera.

I had the option to 'steal' a camera two weeks ago.

Some guy thought it was OK to set up a hunting spot on my brother's property. The property is posted and the boundaries are VERY evident. The guy puts out deer attractant feed, a salt lick and camera right on my brother's property in view of his house. Talk about balls - or stupid.
Heading out on opening day afternoon I spot the camera. Stood there for a while considering if I should take it or not. I decided to just remove the SD card to give the guy the message that he's trespassing.
Heading back to the car that same evening the camera was gone. I have a hunch the guy heard my coming and hid in the bush and watched me take the SD card out, then grabbed his camera and left after I walked away.
My brother has talked to the MNR and police about stuff like this - guys are setting up treestands on his field, etc. The police say that it is quite legal for him to take whatever is there illegally.
Funny thing is - this camera was set up only about 6 feet away from my camera that I had stolen from the same spot 5 years ago.

It may be worth your while to contact the MNR as well, last year I had a camera stolen, notified the OPP as well as the mnr, The opp just took a report, but the mnr said if they did catch they would charge them with impeding a hunt, when they stole camera I was in another stand approx. 500 yards away.

So you are saying that if my neighbor left his car or his kids left their bikes in my driveway , that I could/should claim them!
That is still theft , the only difference between a camera and a car is price, and there is a good possibility that the camera owner will come back and do some type of damage for retribution.

Take the camera down, leave a note saying it can be claimed at the local police station ,
if it is not claimed the police can then turn it over to you, and it's all done legally.

Nate is sitting on the fence? In another thread he chastised someone for possibly encouraging illegal behaviour here on the forum? Then he goes to this thread and boldly suggested he would abscond with a person's gear that was on his property? He's new so we have to take that in account?
