What's the hunting like in WMU 46?
Family member looking at some land near Mactier for hunting... what's the whitetail like? small game? I am assuming moose are scarce... what have the trends been like?
thanks

I hunt just south of Mactier. The deer population is pretty low. Moose spotty at best. Small game and waterfowl is pretty low to average. There is the Wahta reserve close by. Really hard to draw a moose tag. But there is a fair amount of crown land which is a real bonus.

Hunt near the big chute area. As said, moose in the area in low numbers grouse and rabbit the same. Before the ice storm couple years ago, there were a fare amount of deer. Since then I have had 7 cameras out all year and have seen a slight increase in deer numbers. There are a lot of bears in the area and increasing. Last year was the first I have seen a wolf captured on camera. This year I actually seen one and had them howling in the early morning mist after a light rain. It is hard hunting with lots of swamp and scrub brush and dead fall but saying this lots of crown land. Good luck
All the best Don

thanks! I think he hopes the deer pops are at least decent/huntable.. so do I as i will hunt this land with him. Maybe pops will bounce back. I figured moose to be a long shot.. We dont hunt bear so that's of no interest.
