Alternate Beaver Baits

Off to a slow start waiting to get my first Beaver. Plan to keep baiting the 330's with a half inch thick piece of poplar with some beaver lure smeared on.
Talking and trying to learn from other trappers, one baits with potatoes which works well for him, another baits with a carrot and read that an apple is good Beaver bait.
Just curious if baits other than regular local wood diet are valid options.
Hoping my luck turns for the better when ice comes and I can walk to the huts.

In open water sets, I mostly used diving sets . Usually a dead pole across a beaver canal, 330 hung on 2 nails . trap completely under water, so no scent give away. If you have some caster , hang up in a branch beyond trap. Or some caster scent. Kept away from the house and dam, as much as possible.
Under ice I used a small bundle of poplar score the branches to make them show up. wedge the bundle between the jaws.so the beaver hits his head on the trigger or swims through. I trapped mostly on beaver ponds, mostly open water. Hope this helps old243

This is already a help. Score, peel a few strips of bark from the branches, correct? Castor scent beyond the trap and not on the trap when working runs. If read correctly, am surprised to read not to use castor lure too near a hut or dam. I will investigate more about this and practice it.

I never used bait.just blind sets channel sets dam breaks and house entrances.cross overs and under cut banks work well

I concur with Dutch. Set up where you see sign. Lodge entrance, slides etc. You will have a beaver in a day set up on an active travel corridor.

Tuna, Maybe I was unclear With open water, I had better luck in runs slides etc , if I kept away from the house and dam. If you make too much disturbance there you will educate them. Once the ice is on dam and house sets work well. good luck old243
