I have a friend who's a Mechanic, if he worked in Kemptville (60 k's from Ottawa) he'd start at $16.50 If he goes into Ottawa, he'd start at $18.50. A difference of $16 a day...($2 'hr)... sounds good??? Think again.
The simplest calculation; it will cost him about $15 a day in Gas (120km round trip) for his truck AND he's spending close to 2 hrs a day commuting, vice a 15 minute drive to work in Kemptville.
The lure of Big $$ to work in the city gets eaten up in either realized costs or quality of live trade offs. My sister left a job in the GTA and took an $80K drop in salary.....moved to Kitchener. Her commute changed from an 1hr of bumper to bumper to 10 minutes..she could theoretical walk to work. She found, even with the pay cut, she still has far more money in her pocket at the end of the month and far more down time....
Go north young man go north..less pay , better quality of life..

A good friend of mine lives and works in Gravenhurst, he says more than 50% of the town goes on government assistance during the months when the tourists are not around to pay their wages,. So I guess the folks from the city are good for something.

Chase the dream not the money.
I find it wierd I can go way the hell up north make 20 bucks an hour and most of the home's are are less than 150 thousand on average .
I took a 20 thousand pay cut to work where I do now. Sometimes it's not worth the money . I was working crazy hours so I never saw the kids or my wife . Next I was driving over 200 km a day in my own personal vehicle that is a oils change every month. If your vehicle is under warranty then you need a to keep up oil change at 5000km . Would need to buy a new vehicle every few years plus wear and tear plus other repairs.
When you blast through a 3 year warranty in a little over a year because of the kms it's not worth it . Now I work 15 minutes from home have plenty of time to spend with the family I don't need to spend 20 thousand on a car every 3 years plus another 120 bucks a week in gas.
My kids have everything they need or want that's what matters. The oldest is in college with a level head on Her shoulders.
What else can I ask for. Just in gas alone I saved 90 bucks a week plus 40 bucks moth oil change . I don't have a car payment to be made every made every month. I save my self a thousand bucks a month easy and save 10 hour a week not driving to the city every day.

Yes Bushmoose I have traveled outside the GTA and I am up north more than half the year.Exactly what part of my post do you find not to your liking. Here are some facts you might not want to ignore, the local job is posted in Wollaston Township for the job I mentioned, the house price is my next door neighbors up north. The cost of a home in my neighborhood is exactly what was posted and I can send you examples. But as a Southerner I don,t mind being called a what you refer us as, I like being a down here, I,am pretty happy and comfortable. But you don,t appear to be as happy. Please tell us Southerners why Uncle Bushmoose is so unhappy. Is it because you have not earned a good pension or because your home is not worth a million dollars or that you still find yourself fighting to hunt on Crown land.Tell us why East of the Soo is so good, I am thinking of moving up there just so I can be as happy as you appear to be.LOL

Simplistic thinking. A 900square foot woodclad bungalow just sold around the corner from me for over $900,000.00 Its being renovated for an additional 50 grand. Your investment in a home in Kemptville is not going to bring in anything like that in appreciation.A $150,000.00 house up north simply does not appreciate.Your access to land (Crown) remains that access only, not an investment.Short term gain for long term pain.
Now we know lots of folks cannot take the hustle and bustle of the big City life and competition for everything from housing to parking spots.Maybe better they live in upper rubber boot working for the most part in poorly paying jobs and hoping the local mill or mine does not shut down.
