Well your post stated you can go "way the hell up north" I was wondering why you posted from Port Bolster. I do not agree with you that there is plenty of work up north maybe you can give us examples from employment ad,s of all these available job postings....

I am 52 yrs old, born in Toronto, grew up in Mississauga and now live in Waterdown.
In 1979 I was 13 yrs old and never had a clue about Northern Ontario until the train disaster and a family friend in the Sault offered to house us because we were evacuated and had nowhere else to go. Let me tell you that was the greatest week and a half of my life. the second day I was there we went deer hunting and I rode my first dirtbike. I chopped wood for the first time and fished every day. It really gave me the love for the outdoors.
For various reasons I could never get the courage to make a move to the north. Sault St Marie, Sudbury or North Bay. Looking back, If I could do it all over again I would have started a family there. My kids are in their teens and would never agree to a move at this time in their lives.
I think it was said best when they say chase the dream and not the money!

Yea I can there as well .There is a house I'm interested in 84 thousand. 4 bed 2 bathroom . Also I know there is work there. Could of already lined up 20 an hr 40 to 50 hrs a week. . I choose to stay here awhile . I'm thinking about the investment of renting a house tho.

As for the kids working it's called they grow up get their license and find a job just like everyone else. Plenty of work up north you just have to be willing g to work. My mom lives in the far north she is bugging me to move up even jobs up 30 an hr.

Well boggle your mind some more, here is the posting and that is what it paid AND you have to use your own pick up truck to do the garbage collections. What a bonus, the local school might get closed, this is the third year it had to be saved. The local hospital is 30klms away and you better only need a few stitches or your into travelling to Belleville or Peterborough. If you need cancer treatment think Oshawa.Your not living in little huts covered with bison skin, your paying
$300,000.00 plus for a decent house.Again half the hamlet is on welfare.

If your ambition stretches to enjoying youself , screwing over your kids and having a nest egg from a 84 thousand house as their inheritance,go for it.My son has more than that in his pick up truck sitting in the driveway. Maybe some of the northern boys might want to stop playing, put in countless hours of overtime and get with the rest of the real world.

That's not the only way for an inheritance. There are banks for a reason and not just to be In Debt with them . Use your money responsibly and you will have more money. I just picked up a crown Vic mint 90 thousand km it's paid for in one BIG payment. It will last many years came with all oil change and all the work papers with it since it was NEW. .

To each their own your son will be in Debt most of his life.

Let me think do I need a a 80 thousand dollar truck ? Nope
would I ever buy one nope. Like I said to each their own my kids will be fine without a house inheritance . Thanks for the wonderful tip tho the better my house the the better the kids are .

What about the people who work so hard to pay their bills and don't get to see there kids because they can't afford to stay home. Is this ok for the kids too .

Here is a tip why pay the bank interest when they can pay you ?. Manage your money you will have more.

There are plenty of kids who grow up in the country side, go to university in TO, London or Kingston and do what they want afterwards. You don't screw them up because you don't live in a city, far from that.
You do what you got to do for your family. There is no shame one way or the other but life is better out of the city unless you like concrete.

I'm a licensed carpenter in Toronto. Renovations and additions mostly. Looking to leave the gta for good in a year and a half. Housing under 200k and a few acres is what we're looking for. My biggest concern is not having enough work. Probably just being paranoid and I have talked to tradesmen in the muskokas, kawarthas-even as far as Prince Rupert B.C. who say there is work for those who want to work. I really want out of the rat race but also want to stay busy or almost busy with work year round....

Telling a thrifty Scotsman how to save money is pretty cheeky of you. LOL I,am driving a 17 year old truck,if it runs keep her going.I could pay juniors truck of in two seconds but I,am not going to because I want him to realize there are consequences to bad decisions. He will probably be in debt most of his life, arent we all. My wife stayed home all the kid,s life, so that is not an issue. My bank is paying me interest every month, thanks very much.
