So this is how it's going to be.....I spend 3 hrs in the pop-up..notta, come home, drop the hunting stuff and get the dogs and head out for the morning walk around the hayfeilds. Go back around the corner and there in the field is a beauty big buck, 6 or 8 point easy, staring at me .

I think he may have followed me out of the bush...

Nice to know there is one around, because I'm not seeing anything while doing the hunting thing.

Congrats on the deer Jaycee. I saw 11 last night but all way out of range. One nice buck chasing like mad too. Identified the food source today and put up a pop up. Come on tonight!

I have had them follow me before, mostly at night on my way out. I hunt a small area with one buck and two resident does, the buck knows just how far away to stand and watch me LOL.

Fresh liver and onions tonight mmm good , had a big doe come to me cross wind at [lasured] 157 yards, she stopped and looked as if she was going to head back into the bush, she was about 15 yards out in the field.
As I cannot hunt tomorrow , and don't know what sat. or sun. will bring for weather, took the shot , Savage 10 ML-ll , one shot one kill. a quartering on shot , busted shoulder took out the heart bang , dropped tried to get up and dropped again without a twitch.
It was a " BIG " doe, I could hardly move her around to get her gutted, had to wait for help to load her into the truck.

That's 9 one shot kills with the good ole Savage smokeless/

Thanks Frank. Unfortunately as others have echoed the December ML hunt has been a bust here as well. I swear the weather is like we used to have in November. The deer are 100% nocturnal and have now patterned me. Only so many stands and my daily in / out ritual has been noticed by them I'm sure as for example, walking in this morning I noticed the broken thin sheet of ice in the puddles. I set up in a choke point half way in between the fields and bedding area and am on stand a good 30 minutes before legal shooting in the dark morning but they already have headed back.

The evening hunt brings the same results. Two nights ago as I climbed down from the stand I turned around and my head led lights shinned on eye balls looking at me from a distance of 30 yards and started approaching. My heart skipped a beat as with my gun in a case and basically defenseless I envisioned having to fumble for my knife and protect myself from a hungry coyote. Turns out it was that doe again that was blinded by the light and curious. Had it been 5 minutes earlier she would have been in my freezer.

And then there are the wild turkeys. Don't they know that a big orange pumpkin up in a tree is danger to them and that a printed camo pattern is much safer to approach? They certainly can detract from the hunt!

Last kick at the can tomorrow. A fresh scrape done a couple of days ago brings a bit of hope to a tough Buck hunt this year.

Had a similar instance during my November ML hunt. Went home mid day to grab a shower and change of clothes, and while in the bathroom, look out the window and see a doe being followed by a decent buck across an open field, about 250 yards away.

It's hearing about the slim pickings in December that make me glad that I hunted in the November season. Although there have been times when the first hunt was unproductive, and everyone in the late season seemed to get a deer.
