30 yds
While heading to my ground blind this fall I came across running deer tracks with blood on the snow....I am going to shorten up this story which I am still baffled by. I was involved in a highly intensive search for a period of 6 days off and on [ as Im retired and have the time] No ravens no coyote concentrations. The most unusual aspect is that over the period of time when the blood trail was very plain I did not find anyone tracking this animal, I,m sure that I found were the shot was taken from, and from that point there were footprints heading to the road were the vehicle tracks were in the snow. I called MNR before starting to track the animal, just in case they would want to be involved because of the amount of blood with no trackers. As this was a tract of Simcoe county forest I thought that is what I should do. The sad part of this is that I never received a call from a C.O. and I do not believe that was because of a lack of interest but a shortage in staff at that time of year.
Why would anyone shoot a deer and not even walk over to were the blood trail started....30 yards?

Sounds like a number of things could have happened, so why post this?

To much missing info to suspect anything. And why post this now? But I am surprised you didn't even get a call back

Has too much time on their hands
This is probably not the right sub-forum for your thread, but it is interesting. I think I know the tract you're talking about.
Although it would be nice to know how this turned out, it woudn't be normal procedure for the investigators to notify you any further of the status/outcome, unless you were needed as a witness or for a statement.

Did you see the deer and what type of wound it had? Maybe it was a natural wound from fighting, barbwire, hit by a car, ticks, etc. or a female thing. That would explain why you didn't find it or see any ravens.

Plenty of possible reasons, hunter believed they missed the animal, hunter a rookie, hunter a poacher who got scared because he was close to the road and did not do a follow up.How do you know the deer was shot?Could the hunter just be a motorist who hit the deer on the road and done a quick follow up to get a road kill?

Thanks for the info guys. but thats not what I was looking for. There is much more information that I do not want to get into as of now. This was something which was very disturbing and I was not looking for ifs and buts, it was meant to be a statement that we as ethical outdoorsmen would find interesting.

So you found blood and spend 6 days searching for it and did not find it?
You do not want to give details but you are disturbed by the details and you want us to be disturbed as well by the details for which you will not give, that makes no sense.
I found blood in a track as well, it was Jan 1st, we figured that the deer may have been hit on the 31st by a bow hunter, tracked it for a km or so, nothing came of it, not disturbed in the least.
I also found blood in a track in a swamp, it was an area that my father had hit a deer with a bow the previous weekend, blood was fresh, not a lot of it and not the right kind of blood. He tracked his for 4 hours, the blood seemed to be a brisket hit or leg, the blood dried up, not able to track anymore. We think that the deer started to bleed again but could not be found.
Would that be disturbing to you?
